Happy New Year! For the new year there are a couple of updates to the site.
First, Vista Drive has four new pictures. Also, don't miss the new
edition of American Bliss. For those who haven't checked out American
Bliss it's basically a sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, look at
everything.
Afterthoughts : NORM!
The first class of my day my freshman year in high school was History.
It was a cool class because I got to hang out with a couple of my friends
from junior high. We loved goofing around in class. the funniest
moment came just a few moments before the first bell rang. There
was this kid who was a dead ringer for George Wendt?, who portrayed the
character Norm Peterson on the show Cheers. Cheers was a big hit
at the time, and I loved watching it. This kid had the horrible luck
to not only look like Norm Peterson, but to have a class with me... a total
wise ass. The second I saw him, that first day of class, I automatically
thought of Norm, and how the entire bar used to yell out NORM! when he
walked in the door. Well, I turned to my friend Oscar and told him
what I was thinking. I told him that when this kid walked into the
room we would yell out NORM, like on the show. When this guy, who
I think was actually named Jordan, walked into the room the next day me
and Oscar yelled out NORM! Everyone laughed. But, we weren't
happy just doing this joke once. We ended up repeating this little
ritual every single day. It got to the point that not only did Oscar
and I yell out NORM, but so did half the class. It got so that if
Jordan wasn't in class one day we would feel like there was something missing.
The funniest thing that happened was the day that Jordan was called up
to the teacher's desk for something, or other. The teacher, having
heard us say NORM all those weeks called him Norm too. Me and Oscar
just looked at each other and nearly died. I'm laughing while I write
this. He quickly called him Jordan, but the damage was done.
The thing is, Jordan never said a word in class. He never came up
to us and asked us to stop. I don't think I spoke a single word to
him. Yet, to this day, my friend Oscar and I still talk about old
NORM from history class.
Editorial : No More
It's beginning to feel a lot less like Christmas. Every year that goes
by I feel less and less in the Christmas spirit. This year I asked
everyone not to get me a gift. As I write this it's Christmas Eve,
and I'm hoping that I don't get any gifts. I'm waiting for Thursday
to come around because I could care less about Christmas. I didn't
go out and do any Christmas shopping, nor did I go get anyone any cards,
nor did I care to trim my Christmas tree.
I'm not just in the spirit of the season. It's been a while since
I was happy that Christmas was here. But, people have spoiled Christmas
for me. People suck. The stores are jammed full of people looking
for gifts. I don't like crowds. Everyone is supposed to be
nice to each other at this time of year, but that's not happening.
Quite the opposite is true. Everyone is shoving each other in order
to buy their trinkets. Everyone is in a super hurry. As if
they weren't impatient enough now everyone has to be the first in line,
the fastest through the store, the first to the open parking spot.
There isn't a patient person out there right now.
I'm tired of it. I'm tired of this whole charade. I don't
even know why I bother. Well, actually, I don't anymore. 2002
is the last year I'll do this whole Christmas thing. I'm getting
myself something I want this year, and getting no one else anything.
I never get anything I want for Christmas anyway. Why buy something
for someone when you know they won't want it? I don't want anything
this year, and I told everyone so. Don't expect anything from me,
because I ain't buying it.
Etcetera : Catcher in the Rye
I recently finished reading
So many things have already been said about this book that I feel my
humble review might not do it justice. What I can say is that it
is one of the best books I have ever read. I absolutely love this
book. Right from the start I knew that this book would be different
from any other I had read. Here's a quote.
If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably
want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like,
and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that
David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if
you want to know the truth.
Anything I say about The Catcher in the Rye isn't going to do justice to the book. So, just go and read it for yourself. I highly doubt you'll be disappointed.
